Day Trips from Las Terrenas by Rented Vehicle

Updated on October 1, 2026

The Samaná peninsula packs waterfalls, bays, fishing villages and beaches into a small area, and a rented vehicle lets you explore it at your own pace. This guide covers classic day trips from Las Terrenas, how each place is reached and which vehicle suits it. We do not give distances or driving times: they depend on your vehicle, the weather and the road, so check a map app before leaving and allow extra time.

Before you set off

  • Start early. Roads are easier in daylight, and you will want to be back before dark.
  • Fill the tank before leaving town, and carry some cash for parking, guides or entrance fees.
  • Check the weather. Heavy rain makes dirt tracks muddy and mountain roads slippery. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, so follow the forecasts during that period.
  • Tell the rental company your plan. Ask whether your contract allows long trips with a quad or scooter, and save their assistance number.
  • Download an offline map, as mobile coverage can be patchy in rural areas.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, a rain jacket and closed shoes for walking.

El Limón waterfall (Salto El Limón)

The community of El Limón lies on the road from Las Terrenas to Santa Bárbara de Samaná. The waterfall cannot be reached by vehicle: you leave your car, quad or bike at one of the departure points in or near the village, then continue on foot or on horseback along a trail, usually with a local guide. The path crosses streams and can be muddy and steep in places, so wear shoes with good grip. The falls are in a protected area, and an entrance fee may apply.

  • Road: paved main road with hilly sections.
  • Suitable vehicles: car, quad, buggy or motorbike; a scooter only for experienced riders.
  • Alternative: several local agencies offer guided quad or buggy outings that combine the waterfall with a coffee route and a beach, if you prefer not to find your own way.

Santa Bárbara de Samaná

The provincial capital sits on Samaná Bay, beyond El Limón. From its harbor, boats leave for Cayo Levantado, a small island in the bay, for Los Haitises National Park on the far shore and, roughly from January to March, for whale watching, when humpback whales gather in the bay. If you take a boat trip, leave your vehicle in a secure car park and keep the keys and documents with you.

  • Road: paved main road via El Limón, with mountain sections.
  • Suitable vehicles: a car is the comfortable choice, especially for families; a motorbike or quad suits experienced riders if the rental contract allows the trip.

Las Galeras, Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón

Las Galeras is a small coastal village at the eastern end of the peninsula, beyond Santa Bárbara de Samaná. It is the longest trip in this guide, so plan a full day.

  • Playa Rincón can be reached by road from the Las Galeras area. Ask locally about the condition of the access road, which may be rough, and about parking.
  • Playa Frontón is generally reached by boat from Las Galeras or on foot along a trail, not by car.
  • Suitable vehicles: given the distance, a car is the practical choice; leave enough time to drive back in daylight.

Cosón, Playa Bonita and the west side

West of the center, Playa Bonita and the long beach of Cosón make an easy half-day outing. The rides are short, so any vehicle works, including a scooter. It is also a good first outing to get used to your vehicle and the local traffic.

Playa Morón and lesser-known beaches

Playa Morón features in several local quad and buggy itineraries. Some beaches on the peninsula are reached by dirt tracks whose condition changes with the weather. Ask your rental company for directions and current conditions before going, and turn back if the track looks beyond your vehicle or your skills.

Viewpoints

The mountain roads around Las Terrenas, such as the road toward Sánchez on the southern side of the peninsula, offer views over the coast and Samaná Bay. Stop only where you can pull fully off the road, and never on a bend.

Safety on the road

  • Traffic drives on the right. Keep to moderate speeds and expect speed bumps, potholes and animals, especially near villages.
  • Wear a helmet on any scooter, motorbike or quad, for every rider.
  • On mountain roads, brake before bends and use a lower gear on descents.
  • Overtake only with clear visibility; trucks can be slow on climbs.
  • Avoid driving unfamiliar roads after dark.
  • Never drink and drive, and take breaks on long days.
  • Keep photos of your license, passport and rental contract on your phone.
