What to know before renting a buggy

A buggy is driven like a car, with a steering wheel and pedals, and its seats are side by side; depending on the model, it has two or more seats. It usually has a protective roll cage and seat belts, but it is an open vehicle, so you are exposed to sun, dust, mud and rain. Ask whether you can drive on your own or whether the rental company requires you to follow a guide or join a group, and in which areas driving is allowed.

Conditions worth comparing

  • License: ask which driving license is required and whether there is a minimum age for the driver.
  • Deposit: amount, payment method and when it is returned. On this site, the deposit is shown separately from the price.
  • Insurance: what it covers (third-party damage, damage to the buggy, theft) and the excess or deductible.
  • Equipment: whether helmets or goggles to protect against dust are provided.
  • Delivery: whether the buggy can be delivered to and collected from your accommodation, at what cost and at what times.
  • Duration and cleaning: how days are counted, what a late return costs and whether a cleaning fee applies if the buggy comes back muddy.

Who it suits

A buggy suits couples or small groups who want an open-air outing and prefer a steering wheel to handlebars. Unlike on a quad, you sit side by side and wear a seat belt, but a buggy gives no protection from rain and has little room for luggage. For long journeys on paved roads, a car is usually more comfortable.

Practical tips

  • Before setting off, check the brakes, lights, tires, seat belts and fuel level, and take photos or a video of the buggy. Make sure existing damage is noted on the contract.
  • Fasten your seat belt and keep arms and legs inside the vehicle.
  • Bring sunglasses, sun protection and clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
  • Avoid driving at night on tracks you do not know.
  • After rain, dirt tracks can be slippery.
  • Keep the rental company's contact details in case of a breakdown.
