What to know before renting a quad

A quad (ATV), often called a “four wheel” in the Dominican Republic, is an open four-wheeled vehicle steered with handlebars. It handles differently from both a car and a motorbike: it is heavy, you need to slow down and shift your body weight in bends, and it can tip over on slopes or uneven ground. If you have never driven one, ask for a briefing before you leave and take a short test ride somewhere quiet.

Conditions worth comparing

• Deposit: amount, payment method (cash or card) and when it is returned. On this site, the deposit is shown separately from the price.
• License: ask which driving license the rental company requires and whether there is a minimum age. Carry the original document.
• Helmets and insurance: check whether helmets are provided for both rider and passenger, what the insurance covers (third-party damage, damage to the quad, theft) and how much you would pay if the quad is damaged (the excess or deductible).
• Delivery: ask whether the quad can be delivered to and collected from your accommodation, at what cost and at what times.
• Duration: compare the total for the same number of days, and ask how days are counted (24-hour periods or calendar days) and what a late return costs.
• Passenger and riding areas: not every quad is designed to carry a second person. Also ask whether the contract restricts where you can ride.

Who it suits

A quad suits travelers who want to get around the area independently, alone or as a couple, and who are comfortable in an open vehicle exposed to sun, dust and rain. It is less practical with luggage or young children. If you need more protection or more seats, compare car and buggy offers too.

• Before setting off, check the brakes, lights, tires and fuel level, then take photos or a video of the quad. Make sure existing damage is noted on the contract.
• Ask about the fuel policy, for example whether you must return the quad with the same fuel level.
• Wear a helmet, closed shoes and sun protection.
• Avoid riding at night on roads you do not know.
• After rain, dirt tracks can be slippery and muddy.
• Keep the rental company's contact details in case of a breakdown.
