Quad Rental in Las Terrenas: A Practical Guide Before You Book

Updated on October 1, 2026

The quad, often called a "four wheel" in Las Terrenas, is a popular way to explore the beaches, country tracks and hills of the Samaná peninsula. This guide covers what to expect, which conditions to check before you sign, what the roads are like and what to ask the rental company. Every company sets its own rules, so use this as a checklist and always ask for the details in writing.

What to expect

  • Different engine sizes. Rental quads in the area range from roughly 300 to 700 cc. The more powerful models are heavier and need more experience.
  • One or two seats. Some models are designed for a rider and a passenger, others for one person only. Ask how many people the specific model can carry.
  • Made for exploring, not for long distances. There is no protection from rain or sun, little room for luggage, and long stretches of road get tiring.
  • Alternatives. For airport transfers or travelling with suitcases, a car is more practical; for groups heading onto dirt tracks, compare buggies too.

Conditions to check before booking

Item What to check
Deposit Amount, form (card hold or cash), when and how it is returned. Ask for a receipt.
Licence Which driving licence the company requires for that model.
Minimum age Varies by company; some ask for 21 or older.
Helmets How many are included, sizes and condition (strap, visor).
Insurance What is covered (third parties, damage to the quad, theft), excess and exclusions.
Fuel Policy (full-to-full or same level) and the charge for missing fuel.
Delivery Whether they bring the quad to your accommodation, and at what cost.
Rental period How a day is counted (24 hours or calendar day), weekly rate, late return.
Assistance What to do after a breakdown or a flat tyre, and who to call.

You will usually be asked for your driving licence and an identity document, normally your passport. Some companies include basic third-party liability insurance and offer wider cover at extra cost. Read the exclusions, especially for dirt tracks, sand or water, and do not confuse the refundable security deposit with the advance payment some companies ask for to secure a booking.

Roads and terrain around Las Terrenas

In town

Traffic mixes scooters, motoconchos (motorbike taxis), cars, pedestrians and sometimes animals. Watch out for speed bumps and potholes. Ride slowly and expect vehicles to brake suddenly to pick up passengers.

Hill roads

Roads climbing into the hills often have tight bends and steep gradients. A quad is less stable than a car: slow down before the bend, not in the middle of it, and stay out of the opposite lane.

Dirt tracks

Many access roads to beaches, farms and viewpoints are dirt or loose stone. After rain you will find mud, ruts and deep puddles. Some tracks cross streams: do not cross if the water is high, flowing fast or you cannot see the bottom.

Rain

On the peninsula, heavy and sudden downpours can happen in any season. If you get caught, stop somewhere safe and wait: mud and wet tarmac sharply reduce grip and visibility. Keep your phone and documents in a waterproof bag.

Beaches

Rules on driving on the sand can vary from beach to beach and change over time. Ask the rental company, follow signs and instructions from the authorities, leave the quad at the beach access or in a car park, and never ride among swimmers or over coastal vegetation. Also check whether the contract excludes damage caused by sand or salt water.

At night

Avoid riding after dark: some stretches may be unlit, animals may be on the road and potholes are hard to see. Check that the lights work and ask whether the contract allows night use.

Safety

  • Helmet for rider and passenger, always fastened.
  • Closed shoes, sunglasses (against dust and insects), sunscreen and water.
  • Never carry more people than the manufacturer allows. Adult quads are not designed for young children: talk to the rental company before taking minors along.
  • Do not ride after drinking alcohol.
  • On slopes, go straight up and straight down without sudden moves; avoid crossing a steep slope sideways, as the quad can roll over.
  • Keep your distance: dust reduces visibility.
  • Carry a charged phone and an offline map; mobile signal can be weak in the hills.
  • If it is your first time, start with a smaller model or consider a guided tour.

Popular routes in general terms

  • Beaches west of town, such as Playa Bonita and Playa Cosón.
  • The El Limón area to the east, with its waterfall (Salto El Limón). Guided quad and buggy tours often combine it with coffee plantations, rivers or beaches such as Playa Morón. The last stretch to the waterfall is usually done on foot or on horseback from starting points along the road.
  • Country tracks and viewpoints in the hills, with views over the coast.

Before setting off, ask the rental company which routes it recommends given the state of the tracks and the weather, and how much time to allow.

Key questions before booking

  1. What does the price include: insurance, helmets, delivery, taxes?
  2. How much is the deposit and when is it returned?
  3. Which licence and what minimum age are required for this model?
  4. How many people can the quad carry?
  5. What does the insurance cover, what is the excess, and what happens after an accident, a breakdown or a theft?
  6. Can I use it on dirt tracks or near the beach?
  7. What happens if I return it late or with less fuel?

When you collect the quad, check the brakes, tyres, lights and horn, take photos and a video of every side before you set off, and keep a copy of the contract.
