What to know before renting a scooter

In the Dominican Republic, a scooter is often called a “pasola”. Most scooters have an automatic transmission, so there are no gears to change, which makes them easy to ride on short trips. Their small wheels make them less stable than a motorbike on dirt or damaged roads, and low-powered models struggle on steep hills with two people on board. Ask about the engine size and whether the model is designed to carry a passenger.

Conditions worth comparing

  • License: ask which driving license the rental company requires for that engine size, and check that your travel insurance covers riding a two-wheeler.
  • Helmets: confirm that helmets are provided for rider and passenger, in your size and in good condition.
  • Insurance and theft: what the insurance covers (third-party damage, damage to the scooter, theft), the excess or deductible, and whether a lock is included.
  • Deposit: amount, payment method and when it is returned. On this site, the deposit is shown separately from the price.
  • Delivery: whether the scooter can be delivered to and collected from your accommodation, at what cost and at what times.
  • Duration: how days are counted and what a late return costs. To compare offers, use the total for the same number of days.

Who it suits

A scooter suits people who mostly travel short distances, alone or as a couple, and have some experience on two wheels. It is handy for everyday trips around your accommodation. It is less suitable for long journeys, dirt roads or luggage; in those cases, compare motorbike and car offers too.

Practical tips

  • Before setting off, check the brakes, lights, horn, tires and fuel level, and take photos or a video of the scooter. Make sure existing damage is noted on the contract.
  • Wear a fastened helmet and avoid riding barefoot or in flip-flops.
  • The storage space under the seat, if there is one, is small, so do not count on carrying large bags.
  • Slow down in the rain and on sand or gravel.
  • Park in a visible place and use the lock if one is provided.
  • Keep the rental company's contact details in case of a breakdown.
