Which Vehicle to Rent in Las Terrenas? Car, Quad, Scooter or Buggy

Updated on October 1, 2026

Las Terrenas is a small coastal town, but its beaches and neighboring villages are spread out, and many visitors rent a vehicle. The right choice depends less on what looks fun in photos than on four practical questions: how many of you are traveling, how much you need to carry, which roads you plan to use and how experienced you are. This guide compares the five types of vehicle listed in our catalog.

The short answer

  • Car or SUV: the practical choice for families, groups of three or more, airport luggage, rainy days and longer day trips.
  • Scooter (called a "pasola" locally): handy for one or two people moving around town and to nearby beaches, if you already ride a two-wheeler.
  • Quad (ATV, often called a "four wheel"): made for dirt tracks and beach access roads; tiring on long paved stretches and open to the rain.
  • Motorbike: for experienced riders who want to cover more ground than a scooter allows.
  • Buggy: two to four people on rough tracks, some models with a roof; a good fit for a group outing.

Comparison at a glance

Vehicle Seats Luggage Rain protection Dirt roads Typical license requirement
Car / SUV 4–5 (more in some models) Trunk for suitcases Full (closed cabin) Depends on the model; a higher SUV copes better Valid driver's license; check with the rental company
Quad (ATV) 1–2 Very little None Well suited Check with the rental company
Scooter (pasola) 1–2 Small (under the seat or a top box) None Limited Check with the rental company; ask whether a motorcycle license is needed
Motorbike 1–2 Very little None Depends on the model Check with the rental company; ask whether a motorcycle license is needed
Buggy 2–4 depending on the model Little Partial (roof on some models, open sides) Well suited Check with the rental company

Group size and luggage

Two people per scooter or quad is the usual maximum, and a passenger changes the handling, especially on slopes and loose gravel. For three or more people, a car or a four-seat buggy usually makes more sense than several two-wheelers, both for cost and for keeping the group together.

Luggage is the other deciding factor. With suitcases or an airport pickup, only a car is realistic. Open vehicles have little or no lockable space, so carry a small bag and never leave valuables on board.

Traveling with children? A car with a child seat is the safe option; ask the rental company whether seats are available. Scooters, motorbikes and quads are not suitable for young children.

Rain, sun and heat

Tropical showers can arrive quickly and be heavy. On a scooter, motorbike or quad you will get wet, and wet roads are slippery, with longer braking distances. A buggy with a roof keeps off only part of the rain. If you would rather not get soaked, a car is the comfortable choice; otherwise, carry a light rain jacket in a dry bag.

On an open vehicle you are also exposed to the sun for hours: use sunscreen and covering clothes, and carry water.

The roads you will use

In and around Las Terrenas you will meet several kinds of road:

  • Town streets: busy at peak times, with scooters, motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) and pedestrians sharing narrow space, plus speed bumps.
  • Paved main roads: the roads linking Las Terrenas with other towns on the peninsula include mountain sections with bends and steep grades.
  • Dirt tracks: some beach accesses and rural roads are dirt or gravel, and they can turn muddy or rutted after rain.

A scooter suits town streets and short paved rides, not rough tracks. Quads and buggies handle dirt roads well but are tiring on long paved trips. A car is comfortable on paved roads; for rough tracks, ask whether the model has enough ground clearance.

Budget logic

Prices change with the season, the model and the rental length, so we do not quote them here; the catalog shows the prices we have collected from public sources, each with its collection date. A few principles help:

  • Count per person, not per vehicle. For three or four people, one car or buggy can work out cheaper than two or three separate two-wheelers.
  • Look at the total cost. Ask about the deposit, the insurance cover and excess, the fuel policy, extra helmets, child seats and delivery to your accommodation or the airport.
  • Longer rentals often come with a lower daily rate, so a week can be better value than several separate days.
  • Match the vehicle to the plan. A quad for a week of errands in town, or a scooter for a long trip with luggage, costs more in comfort than it saves.

License, age and experience

Rental companies generally ask for a valid driver's license, a passport or other ID (sometimes a copy is enough) and a deposit, often on a credit card. Minimum age and license requirements vary between companies and vehicle types, so check them before booking. If you plan to rent a scooter or motorbike, ask whether your license covers it.

Be honest about your experience: Las Terrenas traffic is not the place to learn. If you have never ridden a scooter or motorbike, choose a car or a buggy. Quads are heavy, can tip over on slopes or in tight turns and do not handle like a car; practice at low speed before setting off.

Safety checklist

  • Traffic drives on the right. Expect the unexpected: vehicles pulling out without warning, animals on the road, potholes.
  • Wear a helmet on scooters, motorbikes and quads, and ask for one in the right size for each passenger.
  • Check the brakes, lights, tires and horn before leaving, and photograph existing damage with the rental staff.
  • Ask what the insurance covers, and save the rental company's emergency contact in your phone.
  • Avoid long rides after dark, and never drive after drinking alcohol.
  • Stay off the sand: riding on beaches damages the coastline and may not be allowed.
