What to know before renting a motorbike

A motorbike, often called a “motor” in the Dominican Republic, is agile, easy to park and uses little fuel, but it requires experience. Compare the type of bike (street or enduro-style) and the engine size, and pick one you can handle comfortably, especially with a passenger or on uneven roads. If you have not ridden for a while, start with short trips.

Conditions worth comparing

• License: make sure your driving license covers motorbikes of that engine size, and ask which license the rental company requires. Also check that your travel insurance covers riding a motorbike.
• Helmets: confirm that helmets are provided for rider and passenger, in your size and in good condition.
• Insurance: what it covers (third-party damage, damage to the bike, theft) and the excess or deductible. Ask who pays if the bike is stolen and whether a lock or chain is included.

• Delivery: whether the bike can be delivered to and collected from your accommodation, at what cost and at what times.
• Duration: how days are counted and what a late return costs. Always compare the total for the same number of days.

Who it suits

A motorbike suits experienced riders traveling alone or as a couple with little luggage who want to get around the area freely. It is less suitable if you have never ridden one, if you are traveling with children or if you expect long rides in the rain. For short, easy trips a scooter may be simpler; for more protection, choose a car.

Practical tips

• Before setting off, check the brakes, lights, horn, tires and fuel level, and take photos or a video of the bike. Make sure existing damage is noted on the contract.
• Wear a fastened helmet, closed shoes and long trousers: the exhaust pipe can burn your legs.
• Stay alert to unexpected obstacles such as potholes, speed bumps, pedestrians or animals.
• Avoid riding at night on roads you do not know, and slow down in the rain.
• Park in a visible place and use the lock if one is provided.
